Chrysalis

2014         80cm x 25cm x 25cm

I am a member of Thames Valley Contemporary Textiles, a diverse and active group that meets four times a year in Bracknell. The group has an exhibition every two years and in 2014 it was hosted by the Knitting and Stitching Show at Olympia in London. The theme was “Halfway Between” and right from the beginning I could not get thoughts about moths and chrysalises out of my head along with the strange concept that there must be two points for there to be something to be halfway between.
I began stitching on fabric and paper trying get a chrysalis shape. I wanted to have a translucence in the finished piece but although fine paper and stiffened fabric worked they were both very fragile so I started experimenting with setting stitched cotton gauze into resin – and so “Chrysalis” evolved and was closely followed by the concertina book “In The Beginning There Was Void”.
