Karh Tog Ruh Fee

2012           115cm x 88cm
My Mother had always wanted to visit Petra, in Jordan, so we decided to go as a treat for her 80th birthday. Starting at Taba in Egypt, driving alone across Israel into Jordan and on to Petra, we became, in our minds at least, like the intrepid explorers of the 19th century. It was in this frame of mind that the idea of the quilt developed, mapping and recording our journey.
Folded fabric was dipped into walnut ink to create an aged unfolded map. Land frontiers and deserts were hand stitched along with quilted mountains and a machine embroidered Red Sea. Photo transfers and drawings were applied and found objects in fabric boxes provide embellishment. Finally a slightly tongue in cheek cartouche was created to commemorate our journey.
